Why I Became a Music Therapist: A Journey Fueled by Passion and Purpose
From the moment I started playing piano at the age of five, music became more than just a hobby—it became my language, my comfort, and my passion. I began with playful, engaging music activities designed for young children, and before long, my love for music grew into something deeper. By junior high, I was intensely training in music performance, and music was my entire world.
But it wasn't until one casual comment in 8th grade that I discovered the true purpose of my musical journey. My chemistry teacher mentioned something I’d never heard before: music therapy. He explained that music therapy wasn’t just about performing or teaching—it was about using music to heal and support others. That was the moment everything clicked for me. Music wasn’t just something I loved—it was something that could help people in profound ways. I knew then that music therapy was my calling.
From Music Teacher to Music Therapist
I hold a bachelor’s degree in Music Performance and Education and spent five years teaching music to children. It was during this time that I encountered several students with special needs. I saw how deeply music impacted their emotional well-being, social interactions, and self-expression. But I also realized that I wanted to do more than just teach music—I wanted to provide comprehensive support through music therapy.
Driven by this desire, I pursued my master’s degree in Music Therapy and became a board-certified music therapist. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of working with children, adults, and families in various clinical settings, where I’ve witnessed firsthand how music therapy transforms lives.
Why Music Therapy Works: The Power of Music
Music therapy is not just about playing instruments—it’s about using music as a therapeutic tool to support a person’s emotional, cognitive, and social development. Here’s why it’s so effective:
🎵 Personalized Approach: Every session is designed to meet your child’s unique needs, whether that’s improving communication, building social skills, or managing emotions.
💬 Encourages Communication: Music is a universal language that helps children express themselves, even when words are difficult.
🧠 Supports Cognitive and Emotional Growth: Music therapy promotes memory, focus, emotional regulation, and social interaction, helping children thrive both in and outside of therapy sessions.
🎶 Engagement and Empowerment: Whether through singing, drumming, or playing an instrument, music empowers children to engage with their emotions and their world in a safe and supportive way.
Why I’m Passionate About Music Therapy
The heart of my work lies in the relationships I build with my clients. There’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing a child light up when they connect with music for the first time or express their feelings in a way they couldn’t before. Music therapy isn’t just a profession for me—it’s a calling. I am deeply committed to helping children feel heard, valued, and empowered to express themselves through music.
Each session is an opportunity to create a safe space where my clients can not only grow but also have fun and experience the joy of music. I believe every child deserves the chance to experience the healing power of music, and that belief drives everything I do.
